ShhAir's
current focus is the threat of increased noise, ground traffic, and
environmental pollution that would result from either expanded air
traffic at Hanscom Field or changes in the character and use of the
airport. Beyond this immediate threat, however, we pursue several
broader and longer-term goals. We promote and carry out preservation
of open space, area of historic importance, and environmentally-sensitive
land and water resources in our communities. We assist local and state
governments in dealing with these issues. We work with state and local
land trusts to acquire interests in land for the purpose of protecting
the environment. We promote alternative modes of transportation that
are environmentally sensitive. And we educate the public about conditions
and initiatives that affect the environment.
With
regard to the immediate Hanscom threat, we accept the concept that
Hanscom Field has a role to play within the area's regional transportation
system, but for general aviation only. Hanscom is currently the busiest
general aviation airport in New England. Its contribution to the area
includes relieving Logan of many thousands of general aviation operations
every year. Thus, while we understand the importance of Hanscom Field,
we are also aware that a delicate balance exists between Hanscom and
the areas that area affected by it. We are increasingly concerned
that the agenda of those who operate the airport will irreversibly
tip the balance against the interests of our nation's birthplace,
our important local historical and conservation sites, and our local
communities.
The
purpose of this website is to share the latest information regarding
Hanscom, and longer-term environmental, issues interested citizens,
community leaders, elected officials, local organizations, and citizens
in other airport-impacted communities worldwide. We welcome affiliations
and strategic alliance with other organizations that share our local
community or environmental concerns. We also welcome your suggestions
and contributions.
