  • 8/13/03 Lincoln Journal: Save Our Heritage suggests that an Arizona site is a shining example of what ought to happen when the National Trust designates a site as one of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.

  • 7/16/03 Bedford Minuteman, Lincoln Journal, Lincoln Journal: Massport board member James Coull finds the National Trust designation troubling, but Save Our Heritage and local residents point out that Coull makes various misstatements and is biased.

  • 7/9/03 Bedford Minuteman, Globe: A History Channel special program will feature the threat posed to Minute Man National Historical Park by the expansion of the Hanscom Field civilian airport.

  • 6/4/03 Bedford Minuteman, Lincoln Journal, Globe, Concord Journal, Lexington Minuteman: An outpouring of reactions to the National Trust designation. Massport CEO Craig Coy suggests that the best way to honor our country's history is to support aviation activity everywhere. Most citizens and conservation groups disagree.

  • 6/2/03 Herald, Lowell Sun, Lowell Sun, Lowell Sun, Globe: Editorials claiming that National Trust designation is another NIMBY argument. [ed: Can a national organization be NIMBY?] Rep. Marty Meehan also rebuts Lowell Sun jab that he can't fight for keeping the Air Force base open and at the same time limit growth on the civilian side of Hanscom by noting that expansion of the civilian side may crowd out the Air Force's Electronic System Center which contributes a direct economic impact of $3.2 billion and over 20,000 jobs on the Massachusetts economy.

  • 5/29/03 National Trust, AP, NY Times, Reuters, Orlando Sentinel, USA Today, Herald, Lowell Sun, Globe, Bedford Minuteman, Ed Markey: The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Minute Man National Historical Park and neighboring communities as one of America's 11 most endangered historic places, "recognizing the very real threat of the Massachusetts Port Authority’s expansion plans for the Hanscom Field civilian airport". Later, they clarified that the Air Force base is not a cause of the designation.

  • 3/6/03 Lincoln Journal, Lincoln Journal, Lincoln Journal, Lincoln Journal, Bedford Minuteman, Bedford Minuteman, Bedford Minuteman: Senators Kennedy and Kerry praise the area's Scenic America designation, saying that "the region's unparalleled treasures - the more than 1,000 National Historic Register sites and 8,000 acres of protected public open space located within the communities -- merit the highest standards of protection and preservation." A flurry of other letters to the editor mostly agree, although Massport predictably tries to diminish the designation.

  • 2/24/03 Save Our Heritage, Herald, AP, Concord Journal, Globe, Herald: Scenic America, the only national organization dedicated solely to preserving the natural beauty and distinctive character of America ’s communities and countryside, today named the historic towns of Concord, Lexington, Lincoln and Bedford as one of America’s ten most threatened scenic landscapes due to expansion of the Hanscom Field airport and roads serving the airport.

  • 3/12/01 Globe: Many prominent historians, including David McCullough, Shelby Foote, Doris Kearns Goodwin and documentary filmmaker Ken Burns have joined the battle to protect Minuteman National Historic Park and other historic sites from development at Hanscom Field.

  • 2/22/01 Park Service: The National Park Service (NPS) and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation to protect and preserve Minute Man National Historical Park in Mass., and other significant historic sites in the vicinity of Hanscom Field.   • 6/10/00 Globe, Lexington Minuteman: Leaders of 2 important historic preservation societies requested review of increased air traffic at Hanscom.
