  • 9/28/03 Globe, AP, Globe, Bedford Minuteman, Concord Journal, Globe, Globe: A NY couple flying into Hanscom Field were killed when their plane crashed into a heavily wooded area near Minuteman National Park.

  • 9/24/03 Massport, Boston Business Journal: Hanscom Field will adopt an integrated camera system designed to automatically identify and record every aircraft using the airport.

  • 5/25/03 Globe, Massport, Bedford Minuteman: With little prior warning to HFAC, Massport is raising landing and hangar fees at Hanscom effective July 1, prompting community concerns that the higher fees might discourage small planes but not corporate jets from using the field.

  • 4/13/03 Globe, Bedford Minuteman: Massport is studying new ways of boosting revenue by raising hangar and landing fees at Hanscom. HFAC will ask the Massport Board of Directors for time to review proposed rate changes at the field and "await our (the commission's) advice before taking any action."

  • 3/7/03 UPI: Anti-terror experts who staged a war game scenario of a major attack against the United States identified what they said was a "gaping hole" in the nation's aviation security infrastructure -- the small and medium plane charter sector.

  • 4/18/02 Bedford Minuteman: The 2001 budget year at Hanscom Air Field ended in the black, with record revenues of $4.1 million. However, in anticipation of bad revenue news for this year, a round of belt tightening is in place at the air field, including a staff cut from 21 to 17. The newly created position of noise coordinator was one of the casualties.

  • 3/21/02 Peter Joy, Lincoln Journal, Bedford Minuteman: Some citizens warn that MAC cares only about promoting aviation and would not be a better steward of Hanscom Field, while others believe options for a change of control of the airport should be explored.

  • 3/21/02 Lincoln Journal: Sen. Robert Havern and Sen. Susan Fargo are preparing to file a bill in the state Legislature that would transfer the supervision of Hanscom Field from Massport to the Massachusetts Aeronautical Commission (MAC). Some HATS members doubt this would be an improvement.

  • 1/8/02 ABC, Globe: 15 year old flight student flew his Cessna 172 from his flight school into a Tampa high-rise, raising questions about security issues for small planes.

  • 12/20/01 Globe: The government yesterday allowed pilots of small private airplanes to fly once again over Boston, three months after airspace was severely restricted because of terrorist attacks.

  • 10/21/01 Globe: "Severe restrictions on airspace within 20 miles of Logan Airport have crippled flight schools, fuel suppliers, and other small aviation businesses at Beverly Municipal Airport and Hanscom Field in Bedford."

  • 10/17/01 Globe: "Immediately the Sept. 11 hijackings of commercial airliners, aviation and security officials around the country focused worried attention on the thousands of smaller corporate, charter, and individually owned airplanes that could also be turned into fuel-laden missiles... the threat is a national one that requires prompt attention from the FAA."

  • 10/11/01 Globe: After ordering small airports last week to implement tough security measures like video surveillance, perimeter fencing, and 24-hour armed guards, the Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission yesterday backed off when several airport owners said they would go broke if forced to comply.

  • 10/5/01 Globe: "Moving to close a worrisome loophole in the Commonwealth's aviation security network, Acting Governor Jane M. Swift yesterday ordered the state's 23 municipal airports to devise a security strategy, and she offered up to $3 million to help them invest in video cameras and metal detectors." Note this does not include Hanscom, which is not under MAC's jurisdiction.

  • 10/2/01 Globe: Small plane flights near nuclear reactor sites have led to calls for increased control over private plane flight plans.

  • 9/21/01 Herald: Travelers afraid of flying on commercial airlines after last week's terrorist attacks are increasingly looking into private planes.

  • 9/20/01 Concord Journal: Hanscom re-opened on 9/13 following the terrorist attacks, and Shuttle America resumed flying but with smaller operations. In the first week, the airline had three daily flights to Trenton, N.J., and one to Buffalo, N.Y. Starting 9/24, the numbers go up to seven and three when they lease a second plane.

  • 9/20/01 Globe: The ban on "visual flight rule" flying is causing financial difficulties at flight schools at Hanscom.

  • 9/17/01 Herald: With the reopening of major U.S. airports under tighter new anti-terrorism measures, some safety experts warn that the nation remains at risk from smaller airstrips with little or no security procedures.

  • 9/12/01 Bedford Minuteman: Following a devastating terrorist attack launched upon the U.S. Tuesday, the United States Air Force facility at Hanscom Airport went on high alert and the civil air terminal was shut down as news spread of the attacks in Manhattan, Washington, D.C., and near Pittsburgh.

  • 8/18/01 Globe: Profile of Charle DeWitt, who commutes to work by flying his private plane into Hanscom Field.

  • 3/28/01 Bedford Journal: For fiscal year 2000, Massport reported its first profit in 15 years on Hanscom Field. Also, flights in February 2001 increased almost 7 percent, but there was less noise measured. 

  • 10/5/00 Lincoln Journal: Hanscom averages 24,000 vehicular trips per day. The article also reported that a new GEIR (General Environmental Impact Report) is scheduled to begin next year.

  • 6/1/00 Bedford Minuteman: The military plans to start a Traffic Demand Management Program to handle the extra traffic heading to new offices.

  • 6/1/00 Bedford Minuteman: A pilot crashed his plane May 27, 2000 on approach to Hanscom. The plane ended up in the Shawsheen River and the pilot escaped unharmed.

  • 5/15/00 Boston Business Journal: A Massport official says that Hanscom can "comfortably" handle an additional 123,000 take-offs and landings.
