Letter: Write to keep FedEx out

To the editor:

By now, most Concordians have heard that FedEx plans to begin operating cargo flights out of Hanscom starting in September. FedEx says they want "only" one flight a day, but we know from bitter experience that one flight now means more later. Furthermore, loading and unloading each flight would require 28 daily 18-wheeler truck trips on the Battle Road - the heart of Minute Man Park - because that is the only public access road to the airport.

It is crucial that local folk, as well as people from all over America, let FedEx know that commencement of heavy cargo service at Hanscom is totally inappropriate. It is equally important that our senators and governor be urged to contact FedEx and call them off this mission. Senator Kerry is running for president; Senator Kennedy is a figure of national stature; and Governor Romney has national political ambitions. All of them care about what people inside and outside Massachusetts think of them. (This especially true for Senator Kerry, who will need actual votes in 27 different states during the first three months of 2004.)

Please contact these gentlemen ASAP. You may refer to our Web site, www.shhair.org, for phone numbers and sample letters, as well as additional information. Contact your preservation-minded friends and ask them to do the same.

A national letter-writing campaign played a key role in persuading Disney to drop its plans for a Civil War theme park next to Manassas National Battlefield Park. This is the most important thing that each of us can do right now to ratchet up the pressure on FedEx and our politicians. By reaching out to our friends around the country, we will multiply our strength exponentially.

Thank you.
