Letter: Tribute is a tribute to Lincoln

On Monday, Feb. 24 I had the privilege of attending a wonderful event at the Minute Man National Historical Park Visitor Center in Lexington, where the four communities of Bedford, Concord, Lexington and Lincoln were to receive recognition by a prominent national organization, Scenic America, for their combined efforts to protect and preserve the historic beauty and culture of our towns. For this reason we have been designated as one of America's "Last Chance Landscapes" in 2002-03.

This is a wonderful tribute, which clearly signifies the importance of our mission to curb the threat of further expansion at Hanscom Airport.

I am immensely proud to be a part of this effort and grateful to those who have remained steadfast in their commitment to this cause. It was truly uplifting to hear from so many prominent speakers and representatives, all of whom share a vision to preserve and protect our sacred resources for future generations.

Congressman Marty Meehan assured us of his passionate commitment to continue the pursuit of an appropriate resolution to the ongoing struggles we face with Hanscom.

At a time when our nation faces enormous challenges to both peace and security, it is comforting to be surrounded by the historical treasures that define our American heritage. This hallowed ground is not merely a symbol of our freedom, it is the "Cradle of Freedom," the root of all that we hold sacred as a democracy.

It is time to demonstrate a greater sense of reverence and respect, rather than continued arrogance and greed. We are fortunate, indeed, to have the support and recognition of Scenic America.
