Letter: Thanks to those who helped ShhAir

For many Saturdays in late summer and early fall Lexington Center was host to a table offering information, postcards, flyers, and bumper stickers addressing the threat of FedEx heavy cargo operations commencing at Massport's civilian airport at Hanscom.

Many thanks to Anne Frymer for her superb organizing effort and to over 15 volunteers, in particular Stew Kennedy, Jane Gharibian and Andy Friedlich , who worked at the table. Hundreds of postcards were sent by both Lexington residents and visitors to our town. The postcards went to Sens. Kennedy and Kerry, FedEx CEO Fred Smith, and Gov. Romney. In addition, many people went home and sent instant Web fax letters from the ShhAir Web site. The almost universal appreciation from passersby for this initiative to stop FedEx was striking.

Has FedEx been stopped? We don't know. They have postponed their initially announced timetable for presenting the plans that would bring their huge jets to the civilian airport, with each flight requiring 28 18-wheeler truck trips through Minute Man Park. But the reality is we need to keep up the pressure. So if you haven't sent your postcards or Web fax letters, go to www.ShhAir.org, press Action Alerts and follow the instructions there. Or call 781-674-9755 to get a set of postcards.
