Letter: Stanley honored to serve town

It is an honor to be the Democratic nominee for state representative from the 9th Middlesex District. This district encompasses portions of Lexington and Waltham. I would like to introduce myself to you and explain my positions on issues that are important to the people of Lexington.

After graduating from Waltham High School, I received a bachelor's degree in business management from Bentley College and a master's degree in public administration from Suffolk University. I live in Waltham with my wife, Kimberly. My son, Ryan, is now 8 years old, and we are expecting our second child this spring.

Two years ago, I was elected to the state Legislature and was assigned to the House Post Audit and Oversight Committee and the Committee on Long Term Debt and Capital Expenditures.

As a member of the Legislature, I have been a strong advocate for funding programs in education, public safety, local aid, health care, the environment, historic preservation, and human services. Despite the uncertain economy and budget deficit, I have been successful in helping to protect many important programs in these areas.

Although I will not officially represent Lexington until January 2003, I have worked on issues that directly impact your quality of life. I have led the fight to prevent the state from building a massive courthouse complex on the Lexington/Waltham line that would generate 2,400 daily car trips through our residential neighborhoods.

In addition, at the request of the chairman of the Hanscom Field Advisory Commission, I received the approval of the Waltham City Council to appoint a city councilor to serve on this board. I decided to appoint myself to HFAC in order to better represent my constituents. In light of the historic importance of the area and its proximity to the Minute Man National Park, I am unalterably opposed to the efforts of Massport to expand the commercial airport at Hanscom Field. Furthermore, there should be no additional flights out of Hanscom, nor any more development at the airport, until a regional, comprehensive transportation plan is in place. At the same time, I believe we must do everything possible to retain the Air Force base.

I look forward to meeting you in the coming months and serving as your representative in state government. I have already begun attending meetings, holding office hours, and knocking on doors in Lexington. Please contact me if I can be of assistance.

Thomas M. Stanley
State Representative
9th Middlesex District
