Letter: Stand against FedEx flights

FedEx Corporation is planning to begin cargo operations at the civilian airfield at Hanscom this fall. The initial schedule is for one roundtrip flight a day, Monday through Friday, sometime between 5 and 11 p.m. with 28 daily truck trips. To learn more about FedEx's plans and to voice your opinions, please plan to attend the HFAC (Hanscom Field Advisory Commission) meeting on Tuesday, July 15, at 7:30 p.m., in the Lexington Selectmen's Meeting Room at the Lexington Town Hall. FedEx representatives will be there to present their plans.

Massport has consistently assured Hanscom's surrounding communities that cargo operations at the civilian airport would have miniscule impact on the environment, including noise, traffic, and air and water pollution. Based on our past experience with Massport, we can be reasonably fearful that one roundtrip FedEx flight can quickly multiply into many additional flights, including nighttime arrivals and departures. Our only time to stop FedEx operations is now, before they begin.

If you are interested, you can attend ShhAir's planning meeting at which we will develop our immediate responses to the threat of FedEx operations at Hanscom. [Please note, this meeting is jointly sponsored by ShhAir and Save Our Heritage. -- mpa] The meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 7:30 p.m., at the Hancock Church. All are welcome. Additional information about ShhAir and its activities can be found at their Web site: http://www.ShhAir.org.
