Save the Acela!

THE ACELA train, even with cracks in its shock absorbers, is worth fighting to save (''Flaws shut down Acela Express,'' Page A1, Aug. 14). I have been traveling to New York since the late '60s, and the Acela is the brightest spot on the tranportation horizon. Its service allows a traveler to get from Boston to New York and back feeling like a human being. And taking into consideration cabs to and from LaGuardia and the high air shuttle fairs, it is a bargain. Plus, the Amtrak people are nice to the customers.

Train service all over the country should get far more support. We are choking in exhaust, stalled on crowded highways, and burning up petroleum. Trains are kinder to the environment and, when run properly, are an enormously efficient and attractive way to travel.
