Save Our Heritage thanks supporters

To the Editor:

Save Our Heritage would like to thank everyone who attended our benefit last
Thursday evening. It was a tremendous show of support from the community.

Jimmy Tingle, substituting at the last moment for Paula Poundstone when she
had to cancel due to illness, did an outstanding job. The silent and live
auctions were a great success. The items donated for auction reflect the
broad base of local and national support for our efforts. Don Henley,
Christopher Reeve, Gregory Peck and Ken Burns all donated valuable items.

So did David McCullough, E.O. Wilson, John Hanson Mitchell, Doris Kearns
Goodwin, and the towns of Lexington and Lincoln. Our state legislators -
Rep. Cory Atkins, Rep. Jay Kaufman and Sen. Susan Fargo - all came to
express their support. Congressman Marty Meehan took time from his busy
schedule to speak to our guests.

The stewards of two of the major sites - Minute Man National Historical Park
superintendent Nancy Nelson and Walden Woods Project executive director
Kathi Anderson - joined us for the evening. All these folks came together
for one purpose: to protect the priceless historic sites and natural
resources that are threatened by the unbridled commercialization and
expansion of the airport at Hanscom Field.

With the withdrawal of US Airways' plans for Hanscom, we finally have
recognition from an important member of the aviation industry that it is
wrong to build a commercial airport next to a national park. With the
continued steadfast support of the community and our elected officials, and
the growing national recognition of the importance of these resources and
the seriousness of the threat, together we will win the battle to preserve
and protect the birthplace of the American Revolution, the cradle of the
American environmental movement, and the home of the American literary
renaissance.
