Preservation group thanks supporters

To the Editor:

Save Our Heritage wishes to extend sincere thanks and appreciation to the
towns, organizations and representatives who joined together in appealing
the FAA’s approval of flights between Hanscom Field and LaGuardia Airport.

As a result of this effort, the court has confirmed two essential points:

1. The FAA’s amendment of an airline’s operations specifications to add more
flights to an airport is an " undertaking " and is therefore subject to
review under the National Historic Preservation Act.

2. The incremental, cumulative impact of additional FAA approvals of new
flights could result in harm to historic sites.

Because we pursued this federal initiative, these issues have now been
clarified in the eyes of the FAA, Massport and the airlines. Incremental
growth is what we have warned of and what we will diligently continue to
challenge. The court has left this door wide open.

Thanks to the unprecedented unity exhibited by the stewards listed below,
the historic and natural resources that enrich our existence, honor the
past, and enlighten the future are sure to be ably protected. We wish to
thank those who recognize that, although the well being of these resources
is in our hands for only a fleeting moment, the actions we take in these
moments to protect and preserve them will have enduring consequences.

Petitioners: ShhAir (Safeguarding the Historic Hanscom Area’s Irreplaceable
Resources), the towns of Bedford, Concord, Lexington and Lincoln, Concord

Historical Park Association, Ralph Waldo Emerson Society, Walden Woods

Amici Curiae: Congressman Marty Meehan, the commonwealth of Massachusetts by
and through the Massachusetts Historical Commission, the National Trust for
Historic Preservation Freedom’s Way Heritage Association, Historic Concord
Inc.
