Letter: Put money where your mouth is

People in Concord, Lexington, Lincoln and Bedford and surrounding communities who oppose FedEx coming to Hanscom Field and subsequent air-, water- and sound pollution and destruction of historic sites might not have time to participate in protests and might not want to engage in legal tangles with the towns about "Stop FedEx" lawn signs.

However, there's a very easy, painless way to voice opposition: when placing a catalog or ebay order, request that your order be delivered any way except FedEx.

For example, L.L. Bean will deliver via UPS at no extra charge. All you have to do is ask. The delivery may be delayed two to three days, a small price to pay for clean air. You can add a one-sentence history of why FedEx isn't welcome; this isn't necessary; the person taking your order has nothing to do with pollution, air field expansion; but your request will be honored.

Thinking back, a MassPort spokesman accused opponents of Hanscom expansion of being "clever." Clear cutting a large portion of Bedford Town Forest and calling it "vegetation control," now that's clever. Give that spin doctor a Ph.D.
