Letter: Opposition was loud and clear

The unanimous opposition of our communities to Massport's plans for Hanscom expansion should be a source of inspiration and pride for all of us. We have shown that we care deeply about the nationally important historic and natural resources in our towns and that we take our stewardship of those resources very seriously. Not only did 800 citizens show up (twice) for the MEPA hearing, but on top of that, there was a tremendous outpouring of written comments, which are remarkable for their quality as well as their quantity.

Comments have been submitted by the selectboards and committees of the four towns individually, and also collectively as HATS; by schools and cultural institutions; by the stewards of Minute Man National Historical Park, Walden Woods, Orchard House, the Old Manse, and other affected sites; by the Massachusetts Historical Commission; and by many other concerned agencies, groups and individuals. Together, we have conclusively demonstrated that Massport's ESPR is fundamentally flawed and that it must be completely revised in order to provide a truthful picture of Hanscom's environmental impact. We are confident that the secretary environmental affairs will act accordingly when he issues his certificate on Dec. 16.
