Letter: Officials praised for scenic work

On behalf of Scenic America, I would like to thank the local, state and federal elected representatives of Concord, Lexington, Lincoln and Bedford who supported Save Our Heritage by attending the Last Chance Landscape designation event on Feb. 24. You have shown a steadfast commitment to finding solutions to the problem created by Hanscom Field airport expansion as it affects your communities.

Scenic America designates Last Chance Landscape when there is both a threat and a potential solution. The integrity of historic and scenic values of the Old North Bridge, the Battle Road, Walden Woods and Pond, Orchard House, the Old Manse, and the many other irreplaceable resources surrounding Hanscom Field is a matter not only of local and state concern, but also of national concern. The American Revolution, the American environmental movement, and the flowering of American literature and philosophy all took root in your area.

By designating the four towns as a Last Chance Landscape, we salute the efforts of elected officials, citizens' groups and stewards of each site who are working so hard to preserve these places for future generations.
