REGIONALIZATION BOOM AT HANSCOM FIELD
Two Airlines Looking at Bedford Airport for New Service
Two airlines have expressed interest in starting new service from the
Massachusett's Port Authority's (Massport) Hanscom Field in Bedford. The
welcome news builds on Massport's innovative regionalization campaign aimed
at promoting regional airports throughout New England to equitably spread
the burden and benefits of air travel growth.
Pan Am has expressed interest in year-around service from Hanscom Field to
the Cape and Islands. Midway has preliminary interest in flights to
Raleigh/Durham.
"Massport will continue to provide regional solutions to the area's
transportation challenges, said Virginia Buckingham, Massport Executive
Director and CEO. "Logan growth continues to slow due to our innovative plan
to provide travelers with alternatives closer to their homes and
businesses."
Massport has embarked on a groundbreaking effort to promote regional
airports, including $100,000 to advertise airports outside of Massachusetts.
The regional airports of Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine,
and Rhode Island are jointly participating in trade shows and meeting with
the travel industry to promote a unified airport system. This network of
regional airports increases the number of options for the traveling public
and fairly distributes air traffic throughout the region. Along with Acela
high-speed rail and increased service from Worcester Regional Airport and
Hanscom Field, New England is offering consumers more choices than ever.
With improvements to Logan, including a new runway to reduce delays,
Massport is working to build a strong, intermodal network that offers more
independence, convenience, and fairness.
