Massport takes watchdog to task

Dear editor:

In the July 11, opinion piece entitled "Airport watchdog plans next move," Save Our Heritage executive director Anna Winter and spokesman Marty Pepper Aisenberg continue their habit of making inaccurate statements.

Mr. Aisenberg claims that Massport has "approved" up to 84 commercial operations in its forthcoming draft environmental status report for Hanscom Field. This report reviews Hanscom activity retrospectively (activity which has occurred since the last environmental filing in 1995) and looks at the airport’s possible future. The environmental analysis is intended to provide the reader with a valuable tool when discussing what could happen at the airport — not what will happen or should happen. Nowhere does the report grant approvals for anything nor is it intended to do so.

Ms. Winter’s assertion that Massport’s Vegetation Management Plan (VMP) goes "far beyond FAA’s appropriate requirement that protected airspace be kept clear" is false. Penetrations to FAA protected airspace exist at Hanscom and need to be removed. The vegetation management project will allow Massport to comply with existing FAA airspace regulations and advisory circulars regarding navigational aids and approach lights systems at Hanscom.

There is enough to talk about when we stick to the facts, so let’s stick to the facts.

Sincerely,

Jose Juves
Massport director of Media Relations
