Letter: Let's dig in our heels and fight

To the editor:

Will Hanscom expansion ultimately cause a mass exodus of families from the town of Concord? Lately, our office has received numerous phone calls from residents who are emotionally and psychologically conflicted about whether to pack up and move away rather than suffer the onslaught of yet more shattering jet traffic.

I empathize with the sorrow, anger, and frustration felt by all those who are directly impacted by Massport's mission to expand Hanscom, allowing it to consume our towns and their resources. Massport cares nothing for community, home, history, or patriotism. They are profoundly wrong. Right and reason can and will prevail...but only with your help and support.

Christopher Reeve, who recently taped an interview for Save Our Heritage, has said that when he feels depressed he focuses outward toward a greater goal and need. We as a community must do the same. There is a bigger picture that we are all part of as citizens of one of the most historic and inspirational towns in this country. If we choose to run from this problem - either by packing up and moving, or by ignoring it - we are selling the essence of our historic towns down the river. It is the residents who support the schools, the historic sites, and the natural resources. Without determined, active, and devoted volunteers who have the conviction to fight for the towns they love, this special area will become Anywhere USA, devoid of its historic character, no longer capable of inspiring greatness and individuality in its citizens and visitors.

The folks at Save Our Heritage and our national advisory board ask you to dig your heels in and fight, as our ancestors did 227 years ago. Call us at 978-369-6662 and get involved with our new initiatives. With your help, we can turn this conflict into a win-win situation for the families of our towns and for responsible aviation interests.
