Letter: Join rally against FedEx June 25

To the editor:

Federal Express is coming!

For weeks, Massport has been downplaying the significance of its recent contact with FedEx. But just last Friday, Massport suddenly informed the HATS selectmen that FedEx representatives would meet with Massport CEO Craig Coy early this week. By the time you read this, that meeting will already have taken place.

We have been informed by more than one source that FedEx intends to begin operations at Hanscom soon, starting with a "small number" of flights. We all know what that means: Shuttle America started with a "small number" of operations - eight a day - which it subsequently increased, in just over a year, to 34 operations a day (before it went bankrupt).

FedEx, as a large and well-respected public company, will not want to contribute to the expansion of an airport that is already having a devastating impact on Minute Man Park and Walden - so devastating, in fact, that the National Trust for Historic Preservation has just listed this area as one of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. We stopped Midway and U.S. Airways from coming to Hanscom, and we will stop FedEx, too.

Please help send a strong message to FedEx and Massport by coming to a protest rally to be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, at the Bedford Town Building complex on Mudge Way.
