Letter: Growth continues at Hanscom Field

To the editor:

Have you been wondering what's happening at Hanscom Civilian Airport lately?

Jets are up 11 percent over last year. This is no surprise to the many
residents in town who are afflicted by airport noise, and it stays true to
the pattern of steady increases each year for the last decade.

And there's more coming.

For the first time, Massport has publicly acknowledged that they are
actively encouraging commercial airlines to come to Hanscom. Massport has
reported conversations with several passenger airlines about initiating
service there.

Liberty Mutual, which doubled its corporate jet fleet at Hanscom in recent
years from two jets to four, is planning to build a large new hanger/office
building at the airport. This opens up four more coveted spaces for jets to
be housed at the Hanscom.

This growth and expansion is not good news for those of us concerned with
preserving our historic resources and ambiance.

Please join ShhAir on May 23 at a wine and cheese reception and local
premiere showing of our new video, "Raise the Alarm." This video was very
well received at the spring conference of the Organization of American
Historians. Our event will be held between 5:30 and 7 p.m. at the National
Heritage Museum, 33 Marrett Road, Lexington. Please RSVP to 781-674-9755 or
info@ShhAir.org.
