Package deal FedEx lands in Hanscom feud
If the neighbors of Bedford's Hanscom Field are cursing the new 50-seat turboprop passenger shuttles to New York, they're not likely to react well to the news that the nation's largest express delivery company also has an eye on the airport.
Federal Express has a growing interest in the suburban airfield, Massachusetts Port Authority spokesman Jose Juves confirms. "They have been in touch with us off and on about Hanscom since 1993," Juves says. "We're in one of the 'on' periods now." That's because much of FedEx's cargo into Logan ends up in the corridor of high-tech companies on nearby Route 128 and I-495.
FedEx is keeping mum. "Until we sign a contract, we don't discuss our intentions," says spokeswoman Darlene Faquin.
Depending on the number of new flights, FedEx may need an environmental review in order to land at Hanscom.
But an increase in noise is sure to rile up the well-heeled neighbors of the suburban airport, especially the group Save Our Heritage, which has been fighting expansion there for years.
