Letter: Cancel your FedEx account

I ask that all Lexington residents and businesses, as well as the town itself (and the schools) cancel all their FedEx accounts and stop doing business with FedEx until FedEx rescinds its plans to operate out of Hanscom. Below is an excerpt of the letter I have sent to the FedEx chairman, Frederick W. Smith, to that effect. Please return all your FedEx airbills to Mr Smith. Thanks for your support.

"My company has been a FedEx customer for many years, but will cease to do business with FedEx until you rescind your plans to operate out of Hanscom Field. ...

"I am appalled by your plans to operate at Hanscom Field. This airport is directly adjacent to Minute Man National Historical Park and only a short distance from Walden Woods and Pond, Orchard House, and hundreds of other irreplaceable American historic treasures. These places are the common heritage of all Americans and should not be damaged for the sake of business activities. FedEx freight trucks on the Battle Road, and FedEx jets over sensitive sites like Walden and the Old North Bridge, will have a profoundly harmful impact.

"It is particularly inappropriate for FedEx to do this when the National Trust for Historic Preservation has just designated the area as one of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places due to the threat of airport expansion.

"If FedEx decides to help protect the birthplace of America by rescinding its plans to operate at Hanscom, I will renew my account with your company. If not, I will urge my business associates, friends and family to cease doing business with your company."
