Air Force base not blamed

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a Washington nonprofit, said Hanscom Air Force Base is not a cause of the endangered designation the group gave Minute Man National Historical Park and environs on May 29.

In a June 16 letter to Governor Mitt Romney, Wendy Nicholas, director of the National Trust's Northeast office in Boston, wrote, "It has come to our attention that officials of MassDevelopment and selectmen in Bedford, Concord, Lexington and Lincoln are concerned that our citing of Hanscom Field civilian airport as a threat to the park's integrity not be construed as opposition to the Hanscom Air Force Base. This clearly is an important distinction at a time when another round of base closures is being considered by the federal government.

"I am writing to clarify that our concerns for Minute Man National Historical Park emanate from the commercial aviation operations at the local airfield managed by Massport, not from the adjacent facilities at Hanscom Air Force Base."
